Carol fast-walked from her parked car to the Light Bean Cafe, entering the cozy interior out of breath.

“Hola!” Nisha called, waving from a table at the back.

“Sorry I’m late,” Carol gushed, a meaningless phrase she commonly used. She unwound her scarf, draped it and her camel hair coat over the chair back, and swoosh settled into the seat.

“What’s new, girl?” Nisha asked, cupping her mug in both hands.

Carol tossed hair off her face, pushing a lock behind an ear. “Samuel’s starting a boxing club at school. He’s filled out the paperwork and got some old guy to help.”

“What old guy?” Nisha responded, prepared to be alarmed.

“He lives in the cottage across from the playfield. Samuel sees him shadowboxing on the front porch on his way to school. Turns out, the guy is a retired competitive boxing coach.”

“Maybe you should have let Samuel play football,” Nisha commented, putting a bite of quiche in her mouth.

“Wait, the story gets even stranger,” Carol said. “The old guy wants the family to participate in the training.”

“What’s his name?”

“I stopped to talk to him, and he said everyone calls him the Old Guy. Samuel calls him OG.”
