Rewilding the Divide

The dividing line is drawn everywhere: between genders and what is or isn’t expected, between good and bad behavior, between dark and light, and between inner and outer. But the circle with a line could be a dial instead of a prohibitive symbol. Turn the dial and work the range instead of strengthening the divide.

Every dividing line can be rewilded as an infinity symbol.

Or the snake biting its tail.

These symbols remind us to weave, blend, and complete intentional cycles instead of dividing.

Because Practice is one of my favorite divide rewilding methods. First, I note when I point something out in others, circumstances, or situations as a problem. “I’m late because the bus wasn’t on time.” “I’m angry because you don’t listen to me.” “I’m hurt because you don’t listen to me,” I repeat a phrase ten times, building the intensity of the expression. Then I remove the because person, circumstance or situation. That leaves me with a simple, “I’m late.” “I’m angry.’ “I’m hurt.”

The next step is to identify a movement range. For example, defensively declaring the bus is at fault for my tardiness -tense shoulders, jutting chin, and clenched fists- can be paired with the “other side” (of the dividing line), acknowledgment without judgment -stillness.
