Electricity enters a metal PlugIn, travels the length of a wired plastic-protected cord, and Pairs with a Tool, providing power. Who shows up to manipulate the tool? Old Man Knees, ten weeks and two days from a right knee replacement.
I open the closet door, reach up, and remove the electric cord from the shelf. Prising open the red metal ToolBox, I select WeedWhip Cord, a flat screwdriver, and a retractable blade. The time stretch without Black Spartan, my trusty Walker Guide I depend on for balance and connection, registers as a challenge.
The music has a hypnotic rhythm that calms me down as I enter a Yard Integration Adventure.
I’ve worn tan, wooly-lined slippers since the surgery, but in honor of YardWork, I wrestle to get my feet into stouter, plastic-protected slip-ons, engaging in mild panic and cursing as both knees protest the effort, and I Teeter Totter on the edge of Overwhelm.
